Cleaning our homes is a chore that everyone has to deal with more and more, especially as we grow older. No one likes doing it when they’re younger, but as we become more independent we quickly realize there’s no getting around it. Not only do we have to clean our homes every couple of days, but once in a while it’s necessary to really get your hands dirty and deep clean. However, as much as you clean, there’s an area that very often gets overlooked in most homes and it gets much dirtier than you’d imagine – your mattress. The average human spends around 8 hours a day sleeping. That equates to about ⅓ of your lifetime spent in your bed. Not surprisingly we’d want to spend that time in a nice environment.

Even if we don’t realize it, every mattress gets dirty over time. Below we’ve prepared a short guide to show you why you should consider starting to regularly clean your mattress.

Sweat

Everyone has woken up drenched in sweat occasionally especially during warm summer nights, it happens to all of us. Sweating while we sleep is natural and isn’t something we can really control. However, the moisture has to go somewhere and often it gets absorbed by our mattress and our pillows. This significantly increases the chances of bacteria and fungi starting to feel right at home in your bed.

Dead skin cells

The average human sheds about a million dead skin cells each day. You lose a big part of that while you’re sound asleep at night. Where do they all go? That’s right, on your bed and your mattress. Dust mites love to eat dead skin and if there’s a good supply they will more than likely start to pile up without you even noticing them.

Prolonged mattress life

You don’t buy mattresses often, but when you do you expect them to last a long time. They’re not cheap, so no one wants to change them every 2-3 years. Cleaning it will reduce wear and tear, remove bad smells and prolong the life of the mattress by a couple of years!

The average human spends around 1/3 of their life in bed.

Not surprisingly we’d want to spend that time in a nice environment. Cleaning your mattress will not only improve it’s lifetime but also improve the air quaality in your room and your overall health!

Better air quality

If the previous two reasons weren’t enough to gross you out, one of the biggest reasons you should start cleaning your mattress is that it can easily affect your health. A dirty mattress is one of the biggest factors to bad air quality in a room. While we sleep we tend to move around quite a bit, this lifts everything in our mattress up in the air including dust, dirt and sweat. This can lead to throat irritation, sneezing, a stuffy nose, fatigue and more!

Regularly cleaning your mattress will significantly improve the air quality in your room and remove any nasty odours coming from it.

Risk of allergies

Your bed is one of the most common places for dust mites to live in. They love the damp atmosphere and the constant supply of food they get. Have you woken up with a stuffy nose, sneezing and feeling like you’re getting sick? There’s a high chance your allergies are getting triggered by those pesky dust mites. It can be especially irritating for people struggling with asthma.

Cleaning your mattress will reduce the risk of itching, allergies and get rid of most harmful bacteria.
