Accidents tend to happen regardless of how careful we are and our carpets are no exception. Whether it’s dirt, spills, food or dust, it can be difficult to keep an area as big clean. One of the worst types of stains that you can deal with, is having to clean oil from your carpet.
Regardless of how it happened, you’ll have to quickly deal with the stain in order to effectively clean it. Since you more than likely won’t be able to fit your entire carpet into the washing machine, it’s good to know a few carpet cleaning tips and tricks. Because of this, we’ve prepared this quick article to teach you how to get rid of oil stains or grease that have stained your carpet.
Prepare your cleaning materials
Before you get to cleaning, you have to make sure you have everything you need at home. This is why it’s a good idea to stock up before you get the opportunity to spill something. Remember, every second counts. The quicker you tackle the stain, the easier it will be to clean your carpet. If left untreated for a while, cleaning becomes significantly more difficult and you might have to call professional carpet cleaners. Items you’ll need to handle the stain on your own include:
- Baking Soda
- Microfiber Cloth
- White Vinegar
- Rubbing Alcohol
- Cleaning Detergent
Use the Baking Soda
Once you notice the stain, quickly get your baking soda and start sprinkling it over the affected area. Don’t be afraid that you’re using too much, just make sure to spread it evenly across the spill. Baking soda is an absorbent, this is why it is perfect for soaking up any liquids and moisture and why it works especially well for carpet cleaning. After you’ve applied it, get your clean cloth and gently rub the soda in, to make sure it’s applied properly.
After you’re done, it’s time to let it set in for about 15 minutes. Don’t add anything else in the meantime, just let the soda do its magic. Once the fifteen minutes are up, grab your vacuum cleaner and suck everything out of your carpet. In many cases, if you approach the situation quickly and effectively, most stains should be cleaned at this point.
Finish Off with Cleaning Detergent
If you’re dealing with a more persistent stain then you might have to add some cleaning detergent into the mix as well. Grab your trusty sponge, put some dishwashing detergent on and carefully blot it onto the affected area. After that add a bit of warm water and blot it all up with a clean cloth. Remember that the more detergent and water you use, the longer the process will take.
Last but not least, after the carpet cleaning is done, leave it to dry off completely. Once done, check for any signs of oil left on the carpet.

Alternative carpet cleaning method
If the first method doesn’t work or you simply don’t have the necessary materials or equipment, you can also try cleaning it with some rubbing alcohol. Apply a small amount of it on a clean cloth and gently blot it onto the oil stain. The more you use, the more it will smell so make sure you open the windows in the room to keep it well ventilated. After applying the rubbing alcohol onto the carpet you can either let it dry off naturally or speed up the process by using a fan.
Once the carpet has dried off, rinse the area with water and dry it off with a clean cloth or some paper towels. If at this point the stain is still visible then it might be time to seek the help of professional carpet cleaning services.
