Life is so much better with pets in it, however they have the talent to make a mess, which leaves you wondering how to clean pet stains and fix this unpleasant jumble. For that reason, every pet owner should know how to put everything back together, which includes cleaning your carpet, couch and bed. These are the furniture in our house that are most endangered by the mischiefs of pets. Every pet lover knows that sometimes when you don’t pay attention to your beloved animal they get vindictive and they do their larks right where they know they shouldn’t. So pet owners need to be prepared to take care of business. We have prepared the perfect DIY cleaning solution to help you deal with stool, urine and even blood stains. The information in the article is the only knowledge you will need to bring back the nice look of your carpet or mattress and leave a nice smell in your home.
How to clean pet stains out of the carpet
If you have pets, you are well aware that accidents happen all the time. It can be your dog that couldn’t wait until his next walk or your lovely cat, who decided that her toilet is not clean enough and the carpet is a better option. Stool, urine and blood stains are the most common problems for pet owners. But with these techniques, you can easily get rid of stains and enjoy your new carpet.
How to remove pet stains of stool
First step is to open the windows and ventilate your room so you can get rid of the smell faster. After that comes the nastiest step. You need to scrape the poop from the carpet. Try to scrape as much poop as possible without smearing it on the carpet. You can use gloves when cleaning the mess. Next, you need to treat the stain. You can use cleaning products and spray them directly on the stain but we will offer you a DIY solution that you can make and use anytime.
- 2 and a half cups warm water
- 2 and a half tablespoons washing soda
- 2 and a half tablespoons hydrogen peroxide
- 1 tsp. dish soap
First, mix the water with the washing soda in a bowl until it is dissolved. Then add the hydrogen peroxide and lastly the dish soap. When the foaming stops you can transfer the mixture into a bottle.
Before applying the mixture to any carpet, test it on a small inconspicuous area to make sure the carpet won’t get colour damaged. When you are sure your carpet will be colour safe, use a clean cloth to dab the solution on the stain. Next with the help of a scrub brush work on the spot. Then use another damp cloth and try to transfer as much of the stain from the carpet to your damp cloth. Repeat this process until the stain is removed and let it dry.
Congratulations, you removed the stain but don’t get comfortable just yet. There is one step you mustn’t miss. Even if you don’t notice it there is a smell that remains on the carpet and your dog will sense it for sure. So get rid of this aroma without waiting. There are commercial products that claim to get rid of the smell but again we want to share a DIY option with you. Mix well a 1:1 ratio of water and white vinegar, spray it on the spot and let it dry. This method is good because the vinegar neutralizes the bad pet odour and your dog or cat won’t continue to use this spot next time it needs to go to the bathroom.
Lastly, leave the area to dry completely and after a minimum of 24 hours vacuum the stain.
How to remove pet stains of urine
When we battle with urine the most important step is the first one. You should blot the urine immediately after the accident. Use old towels, paper towels or even old paper you don’t need anymore. If you blot the area and there is no stain left you are lucky! But if you see colours remaining on your precious carpet use the solution from above and repeat the steps until the stain is gone.
Same case here with the bad odour. To get rid of it, use water and vinegar solution to neutralize any lingering urine smell. This way your pet won’t think he has a new favourite peeing place. When the area is dry enough, vacuum the spot thoroughly.
How to remove blood stains
If the blood has dried out, you need to brush it with a regular steel brush to loosen the stain. By doing this you will remove the stain on the surface of your carpet. To do a deeper cleaning and leave a nice smell on area rug follow these instructions:
Mix washing up liquid with 100-200 ml. of cold water. Add approximately 5 drops of lemon essential oils to tackle the odour. Grab a clean cloth and dip it in the DIY mix you just created. Apply the cleaning solution on the spot. Use moderate pressure when cleaning as you don’t want to push the stain further into the carpet. Repeat the process until the stain is removed completely.
Before applying the mixture to any carpet, test it on a small inconspicuous area to make sure the carpet won’t get colour damaged.
Carpets are many different types, that is why we should always test a cleaning product before applying it on the carpet. Some products may damage the fabric and colours.
How to clean pet stains out of the mattress?
Cleaning your mattress regularly is important for everyone, pet owner or not. Not everyone lets their pets climb their bed but sometimes the cute animals don’t obey the rules. They not only climb on the bed but sometimes pee on your sheets or leave an angry poop. Accidents happen all the time and they shouldn’t be a reason to panic. With pet stains on the mattress, you should treat the stain immediately after the accident happens. You need to use DIY solutions to fight both the smell and the stains.
- Baking soda
- 3 tablespoons of soda
- Hydrogen peroxide 250ml.
- Half a spoon of liquid dishwashing soap
- Lavender essential oil (optional)
To prepare the solution, mix all the ingredients together. If you want to have an extra aroma add two drops of lavender or another type of aroma essential oil. Put everything in a spray bottle and the solution is ready!
Now, let’s start cleaning the pet stain from your mattress. First, soak the stain with dry paper. When you get rid of the moisture, soak the area with white vinegar. Then blot the vinegar until it’s dry. When you are ready with the vinegar procedure, take the solution that you just prepared and spray it over the stain. Leave it for 20 minutes on the mattress and then blot it until the area is dry. If the stain doesn’t lift, keep reapplying. If you can still smell bad odor, sprinkle the mattress with baking soda. Baking soda absorbs moisture too. After the baking soda is dry, vacuum it thoroughly. And this will make your mattress not only clean but fresh!
How to clean pet stains out of the couch
When you are going to clean any stains from your couch you should always check the manufacturer’s recommendations. Be careful because every couch is made from different materials. If you do regular upholstery cleaning then you should already know what products you can and can’t use. Silk and antique upholstery are very delicate and it is best to call a professional cleaning company.
However, when you are a pet owner you are well familiar with the constant cleaning of your couch. Except the fur that our lovely pets leave us, sometimes little accidents happen. The most common are urine stains. The best-case scenario is to clean the stain while it is fresh, but we know that sometimes you come late from work and see that your little fella left you a surprise that has already dried out on the couch. We will share with you two methods for cleaning pet stains out of the couch.
If the stain is fresh immediately blot it with a cloth. As we shared above you should blot the urine and not rub it. And don’t press too hard, because you will stick it in the couch’s fabric. The next step is to mix 1 tablespoon of dish-washing liquid with 2 cups of cold water in a small bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of vinegar to the solution and gently stir. With a microfiber or sponge gently apply the mixture on your couch. With new clean microfiber blot the area and leave it to dry.
But what happens when you are greeted by a dry stain on the couch? If the stain is really dry and impossible to clean we recommend you to call professionals because they use special equipment for pet & stain odour removal. However, if you don’t have time to call an agency and want to deal with the stain alone, here is our solution.
In a large bowl, mix well 300 millilitres of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 3 tablespoons of baking soda and 3-4 drops of dish-washing detergent. Mix well until you see that everything is dissolved and well combined. Place it in a spray bottle and as we said earlier always spot-check on the couch if the solution will make the colour fade. If the fabric doesn’t change colour proceed with spraying the solution all over the stain. Leave it for at least one hour and then dab it with a clean cloth. Repeat until the cleaning solution is gone because if any hydrogen peroxide is left it could bleach the upholstery and weaken the fibers of the fabric.
If you want to protect your couch from any stains we offer an amazing innovative product. Scotchgard protection is your best option! Scotchgard is a quick but highly effective process in which an invisible coating is applied over your carpet, upholstery, mattress or other item’s surface. Once the fabric is dry to the touch, the anti-stain layer starts to work, preventing spillages from penetrating the surface of the household item. This is professional stain protection and we highly recommend it especially to pet owners. You won’t worry if your pet left you a surprise while you are at work or if he was too excited to see you.
